Join Impact Cubed in aiding flood victims
Kentucky has experienced one of the worst, most-devastating flooding events in its history after heavy rainfall and flash flooding hit the eastern portion of the state overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning. Images on social media showed houses and roads submerged and cars swept away by flood waters. The death toll has reached 16 and is expected to rise in this already vulnerable, high-poverty region. Rescue efforts are underway to save people trapped in homes and shelters are popping up to help those displaced.
Short-term emergency needs are for monetary donations to provide medical support, food, bottled water, generators and cleaning supplies. Recovery and rebuilding are expected to take years.
Below are some opportunities to give tax-deductible emergency support to those most in need through organizations we evaluated:
- Appalachian Regional Healthcare Foundation works to further healthcare, education and community involvement in Eastern Kentucky and Southern West Virginia through philanthropy and fundraising for the Appalachian Regional Healthcare system. The Foundation created a Flood Relief Fund to provide residents in need with generators, transportation, food, water and access to healthcare and medicine. 100% of contributions go to those in need. Donate here.
- Governor Andy Beshear established the Team Eastern Kentucky Flood Relief Fund to assist those impacted by the floods and the severe weather system beginning July 26, 2022. 100% of contributions go to those in need. This fund is similar to the one created after Kentucky’s devastating tornadoes in December 2021, which raised $52 million through 150,000 donations.
- Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky, the region’s community foundation, brings together people, ideas and resources to build communities and encourage philanthropy. The Foundation’s Appalachian Crisis Aid Fund will provide short-term emergency aid as well as help meet longer-term needs for those affected by the recent brutal weather.
- Save the Children, a national leader in disaster preparation and recovery, has been working in Kentucky’s rural communities since 1932, providing support to children and families most touched by poverty and inequality. Donate to the Children’s Emergency Fund here.
